Note : After Twin Peaks' second season, which had minimal involvement from David Lynch, and took the series in unexpected directions, audiences were left wanting an explanation for what the hell was actually going on. Lynch's answer was this prequel film, which doesn't exactly explain things, but it does give context, and what's more important, it's a much darker, nastier deal altogether, edging into straight horror, with little of the campy playfulness of the TV show. It provides more new questions than straightforward answers, and is heavy on Lynch's dream logic, or, honestly, more like nightmare logic. It also has a fantastic cast, which, apart from bringing back Sheryl Lee, Ray Wise, Kyle MacLachlan, Miguel Ferrer, Grace Zabriskie, and Mädchen Amick from the show, features Lynch regular Harry Dean Stanton, as well as a collection of weirdo and near stunt castings like Chris Isaak and his hair, Kiefer Sutherland, David Bowie, and Lynch himself in a not insignificant role. If you're a fan of Lynch and the TV show, this is unmissable, and it has some of the scariest sequences Lynch has ever directed.
In a prologue, Teresa Bank's dead body is found floating in a river, and FBI Bureau Chief Gordon Cole sends agents Desmond and Stanley to investigate. They find a piece of paper under the body's fingernail, and Desmond notices a strange ring in a photograph of Teresa, then later sees the ring under a trailer, and reaches out to grab it. Back at the FBI, agent Cooper tells Cole about a dream, then their long-missing colleague, agent Jeffries, appears, rants about spirits, and disappears again. Agent Rosenfield tells them that Jeffries was never there, and that Desmond has mysteriously disappeared, just like Jeffries. A year later, we see the story of Laura Palmer's last 7 days, as she works as a prostitute, abuses cocaine, and has visions warning her, and she sees BOB in her home, but is terrified when he seemingly turns into her father Leland. Various complications ensue with the criminals at the roadhouse where she works, her boyfriend and her lover, and the spirits meet at the Red Room.
This is a very decent 4k remaster, although as is often the case with Criterion's more recent releases, I feel like there's something weird about the color. Either way, the gorgeous cinematography comes through nicely enough, the 7.1 remaster sounds good, as does the original stereo track. As with all Lynch films, there's no commentary.
