Note : Welcome to the high-tech far future of 2023, when society's main problem turns out to be the LAPD not being violent enough. If you can swallow that particular howler, you're in for a light ribbing of what it must have seemed California culture was headed for back in the 90s, a sort of oppressive feel-good hippie authoritarianism where swearing, eating meat, and having actual physical sex is illegal. Instead we got incel techbros, carnivore diets, and neo-fascism, but never mind, this is amusing enough, and punctuated with a number of fairly satisfying sci-fi action set pieces. It stars, of course, Sylvester Stallone, at his most beefy, relishing playing the defrosted caveman in the sensitive future, Wesley Snipes, sporting a dye job that supposedly inspired Dennis Rodman, Sandra Bullock, not getting too much to do as the wide-eyed aw-shucks future cop, as well as Nigel Hawthorne, Benjamin Bratt, Bob Gunton, Denis Leary, and even Jesse Ventura in a tiny role.
In the crime-ravaged future LA of 1996, renegade cop John Spartan takes down sociopathic crime lord Simon Phoenix, but in the process is framed for the death of a bunch of civilans, so he's sentenced to cryo-prison, as is Phoenix. When, in 2003, Phoenix is thawed out for a parole hearing, he escapes, and the San Angeles police department, not used to violence, since society has become a gentle utopia, is no match for him. Lt. Lenina Huxley, an idealistic police officer who's obsessed with the 20th century, learns about John Spartan from veteran cop Lamb, and he suggests that they defrost and parole Spartan, since he may be the best suited to stopping Phoenix. Hilarious hijinx ensue, as Spartan is way too tough and manly for this girly future, which is designed and run by the guru-like Dr. Cocteau. As Phoenix steals weapons from a museum exhibit, he has a run-in with Cocteau, and their relationship proves to be more complex than expected, also involving a group of underground dwellers who form a sort of resistance.
This is a very nice 4k remaster of a very good looking film, nice, subtle, tight anamorphic grain, great color and contrast, and squeaky clean. The 7.1 remaster sounds good too, the original stereo is nothing to scoff at, the three commentary tracks are fine, and the Jaboody Dubs track has quite a lot to riff on. No notes.
